Where is Dan Pirfo?

Posted in General by Cornell's Most Infamous on April 26th, 2005.

Dan Pirfo, a cornell freshman, has gone missing. After being absend since early Sunday morning, a full manhunt is underway. Apparently Dan left, saying he was going to a party, never to return. Police and students are scouring the area. Here are some vitals that might help identify him:

Last Seen: Mews Hall
Height: 5′8″
Weight: 165 lbs
Race: Caucasian
Dress: Black shirt, Khakis

Dan Pirfo

If you have any information, contact the CU police at 255-1111 or call 911. See Find Dan Pirfo and the Cornell Daily Sun for more information. Personally, my bets are on suicide, given his depressive “favorite quote” on the facebook:

Its only after we’ve lost everything that we are free to do anything. Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.

Another possibility is a hoax–an adult gone less than two days doesn’t seem out of the ordinary to me. Perhaps he left for NYC for a little bit!

You state that Dan left saying he was never returning. Who are your sources? Your bets are on suicide–do your know him or is this just sensational journalism? Who cares what you personally think. Get the facts and report them. Simply because Dan likes a rather dark quote doesn’t make him suicidal.

  2. Dan left, never to return. I did not attribute that to him as a quote. I only quote that he was going to a party (I believe at Appel) earlier that night. As for suicide, it’s a probable outcome. There’s no harm in bringing up the possibility, especially coupled with that quote, his odd habits and dress, etc.

When there are facts to report, I’ll report them. Until then, all anyone has is speculation.

  3. Jenn says:

It seems to me that suicide is as likely as anything else — a graduate student disappeared under similar circumstances a few years ago and his body was not discovered after his suicide until several months later (in the gorge).

I’m hoping that Dan didn’t commit suicide, but we can’t bury our heads in the sand; this outcome, as distasteful as it might seem, is more and more likely as the time progresses.

  4. Jethro says:

i have been friends with dan since the freshmen year of high school. From then on we have been good friends. Dan is not the type to commit suicide. Even though he has bad grades at this time and does not seem likely to return to cornell because of his grades dan to me wouldnt do that. This is really worrying me seeing as though they found a body today in the gorge.

  5. Jamie says:

You know, I’m an Ithaca native, and I’m getting really tired of Cornell students either committing suicide by jumping in the gorge, or getting completely drunk and falling to their deaths. Does anyone ever consider that young people live and hang out near the gorges, especially in the nice weather, these people have to find the bodies!! If you go to Cornell you should be smart enough to get help when you are feeling the urge to committ suicide or not drink too much at a party. If you are reading this, consider the people that live here, do what you want in the privacy of your home, don’t pollute the gorges with your body, it’s bad enough you pollute the town with the rest of your ****!!

  6. fran says:

ithaca is cornell, if you don’t like it , leave.

  7. Jamie says:

Shows how smart you are Fran, Ithaca has much more to offer than just Cornell!!

  8. fran says:

and you’re one of them, right???????

  9. Amy says:

    To the “Ithaca Native”:
You are extremely ignorant about this whole situation. First of all, Dan’s death was ruled accidental (read: NOT suicide). Second, who the hell are you to make some an extremely insensitive comment like “don’t pollute the gorges with your body”?! If someone is troubled and depressed enough to commit suicide, I would hardly say they’re “polluting” the gorges. And as far as being smart enough to get help, that has absolutely nothing to do with the situation, because a depressed person is often times too sad to cry for help. Suicide happens everywhere in every part of the country – you shouldn’t pick on Ithaca/Cornell in particular, because bodies are found everywhere else as well, so Ithacans are no more special than anyone else that they shouldn’t have to “find bodies in the gorge”. (FYI: It was three CORNELL students who were fishing and found Dan’s body in the gorge). And regarding your comment that we Cornell students pollute the town with our ‘****,’ there wouldn’t be a town if it wasn’t for us. Ithaca would have even more poverty than it does now (just look at the surrounding towns in Tompkin’s County) if it wasn’t for Cornell bringing all the money and commerce here. So get a reality check lady, and stop wasting your energy bashing our beloved Cornell and its students.

  10. Jamie says:

First of all Amy and Fran, I’m not a lady I’m a guy…and I don’t care to keep up with this back and forth ****. Dan died accidentally, yes, but he was probably drunk is what I was trying to say, and go **** yourselves if you think Ithaca is all about Cornell.

  11. Dave says:

Amy’s right!!! It just goes to show ya: When ya stir ****, it stinks!

Jamie: You know, you write as if are an insensitive and uneducated bore. You must be stupid, stupid, stupid to write as you do.

    Fran: same goes for you.

You know, you can’t and don’t speak for Ithacans or anyone but yourself.

    You know: go pound sand!!

  12. Jamie says:

Guess I am stupid…coming from a CORNELL student!!

  13. Jethro says:

yo jamie ur full of ****. ****, ****, ****. Shut the **** up. Your from a ***** loser town that no one knows about. Ithica is know for Cornell and Cornell only. SO SHUT THE **** UP. Dan was a good friend of mine and from reading ur ignorant self centered comments i just wanted to say **** you. why dont you go cow tipping since thats the only thing u can do there. Your and ignorant self centered asswhole. If i see you in person i will **** you up for wut said.

  14. Hank says:

    You **** are all idiots.
Ithaca is Cornell. It still sucks.
People dying don’t care about polluting gorges unless that’s some witty sarcasm but your response proves its not.
He didn’t fall down. He committed suicide. People just don’t want to face facts.
In conclusion, Cornell sucks, Dan Pirfo sucks, and all of you suck. But Dan Pirfo is not forgotten. In my fantasy football league, the name of my fantasy team is the Dan Pirfo Suicidals.

  15. Jethro says:

yo Jamie first of all **** you. u stupid dike. no one cares about your stupid hick town that no one outside the university cares to visit. i just read what u said about a good friend of mine. look deeper into what u said i was really rude and mean to those who cared about dan. if i ever found out who u are and where u live i would seriously ***** kick the **** out of you for sayin that. so all in all **** u and **** ur stupid town.

  16. Kait says:

i believe this blog has gotten a little out of hand. i’m reading it in april and it hasn’t been written on since february so i don’t know when anyone will read this. however, i am a sophomore here at cornell and knew of dan. i believe we should let his soul rest and stop this disconnect between “ithaca” and “cornell”. Jamie, i’m sorry you feel that cornell students pollute ithaca, whether it be with our bodies or our lifestyle or what not. however, it is true that suicide, depression, and college “****” goes on in many other college towns. I am from new york city and i cannot begin to tell you how many nyu students and fordham students’ bodies are found in the middle of manhattan having jumped from a skyscraper. we should all just come to realized that death is a part of life, however way it happens. and there’s not reason to be upset and feel bad for yourself in light of someone else’s death. just let that person be, however which way they died. we’re all human beings on this world together and the negativity on this blog doesn’t provide any progress into a peaceful future. you may not even pay attention to my post, and that’s okay. we just all need to realize where each other is coming from, put ourselves in each other’s shoes (though that is probalby the hardest thing to do) and then maybe we won’t be so quick to hurt. Please just try to carry as much peace with you as you can. cornell is suffering another death now, of a freshmen. it’s unfortunate, but it happens. we need to mourn and accept it and not get angry at each other, because in the end, we all just need each other. whether you’re from cornell or ithaca, both or neiter, it doesn’t matter in the end. God bless.

I’m sure that no one will ever see this message due to the fact that most of you have probably forgotten about Dan and will most likely not check blogs about his death. But i was his best friend and knew him my entire life. I grieve his death every day and seek retribution for what has happenned to him. There is no doubt that his death was not a suicide, however i question whether or not it was an accident….One day i hope to find the truth.

  18. Mathew says:

i hope you find that truth, in the mean time just try to live.
just because some messed up **** happened to your best friend, it doesnt mean you cant live on and live well

  19. Jon says:

I visit Dans family often. His mother and father cry for him everyday. His other close friends have dropped out of school over the loss. I cant help wanting retribution for what has happenned, yet i know i will never get it.

  20. hermonz says:

dan,i miss him. Times when i feel like **** i go up and look for dan pirfo. see his pics…i miss him. i wish i got to know him much better. he was great i looked up to him. hope to see u again sometime

  21. Jon says:

At times when the memory of Dan’s death becomes detrimental to my psyche, I remember the good times we had together and hope that i will once again see him. I dont believe Dan had much faith in God, but I pray for both our sakes that he will answer my prayers.

  22. Lauryn says:

Dan wouldn’t have wanted you or his other friends to drop out of school or give up good things in your own lives. I think you and they should think about what Dan would have wanted. As those who were privileged to know him, it is your responsibility to remember and honor him, but also to live your own lives the best you can so that you have the best ability to honor his memory.
