It does mean something in any case to be on the list. Maybe they shouldn't apply exclusively to the 5 or so best, but why can't they aim high? You make it sound like the unis on the list are shit, and they clearly aren't. No-one smart enough to get into the best unis would decide the course of the rest of their lives just based on one listing, so you should give people more credit than that. And even if you don't agree with the list, employers do...to some extent at least. Get a decent degree from any of the (at least) top 30 unis, and you will get the job you want, rather than someone from another uni. But maybe your uni wasn't listed, then... Well why not?
