Times Ranks Cornell 15th

Posted in Public Image by Cornell's Most Infamous on October 8th, 2006.

The Times UK ranks Cornell a slot lower this year in its 2006 University Rankings, as it switched places with Beijing University:

College rankings are becoming increasingly fickle and unreliable indicators of where students should want to go, but since people require numbers, not tranches, they stick around. Personally, I think instead of looking at the US News & World Report rankings, you should talk to your peers and alumni of different schools to find where you would fit best. The State school are great if you can’t afford a private school. And every private University has some specialities it’s most famous for.

That said, here’s the entire Top 100 Universities List that I OCR’ed, sorted by rank in ‘06 with columns for rank in 2005, the University name, and location:

Increasingly fickle? You mean to suggest that at one point college rankings weren’t fickle?

  2. And how in the heck do the rank and file colleges? Any kid that looks at this list and figures that he should apply to the “best” colleges on this list should have his head examined.

  3. Virpi Sumu says:

Well why not? It does mean something in any case to be on the list. Maybe they shouldn’t apply exclusively to the 5 or so best, but why can’t they aim high? You make it sound like the unis on the list are ****, and they clearly aren’t. No-one smart enough to get into the best unis would decide the course of the rest of their lives just based on one listing, so you should give people more credit than that. And even if you don’t agree with the list, employers do…to some extent at least. Get a decent degree from any of the (at least) top 30 unis, and you will get the job you want, rather than someone from another uni. But maybe your uni wasn’t listed, then…

MIT is missing in the 100 list.

    Youre right! lawl
