Rankings: Cornell vs Harvard

Posted in Public Image by Cornell's Most Infamous on May 11th, 2006.

If you want to compare Cornell and the other Ivy League universities, what better tool than the brank new Google Trends? As you can see from the graph below, more people are looking for Harvard than Cornell:

This list isn’t conclusive enough, so lets compare all the ivy league (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Yale) search engine results:

Sadly, vile Google only compares 5 at a time.  And, note that terms like “Brown” will be polluted by the fact that “brown” refers to clearly more than just the university!

Didn’t take the time to check out others, but almost all of the hits for Columbia have nothing to do with the university.

If you insert “_____ university”, I think the results are more informative. Harvard U and Columbia U have more references than Cornell U, but Cornell U is about even with Princeton U, Brown U, U Penn, and Yale U, and well above Darthmouth.

    Just a thought.

  3. Alex Krupp says:

But you left out the most interesting part, which is that the trend lines for Yale and Cornell overlap almost perfectly!

Is this tool really so great?

British Columbia alone beats Cornell. Not to mention Columbia House, DC, Columbia sportswear, City of Columbia, the mis-spelled South American country. Penn is a similar story. You already mention Brown.

Is this tool interesting? Yes. Useful? That’s a different story.
