Old Cornell Logo v.s. JC Penny

Posted in Public Image by Cornell's Most Infamous on February 12th, 2005.

There’s a remarkable similarity between the old Cornell University logo and JC Penny’s:

Cornell Univerity
Cornell University “Box”
  JC Penny Logo
JC Penny “Cube”

Does the slight difference in coloration make them two distinct styles? It’s probably not even worth mentioning, especially since the “box logo” has been replaced for use by the University, but I find the brand confusion amusing. Yay, we’re the JC Penny of the Ivy League!

A commenter on the Cornell Redesign blog sez the new logo, “it is an improvement of the ‘JC Penny’ derivative,” while the Cornell Sun says nixing the JC Penny logo “helped unite the seven colleges of the University.”

They already changed because everybody agreed that it was too similiar. Of course, if JCPenney copied our old logo, or even if neither was copied from each other then I think it should have been fine.

You bring up an important point with regard to copyright infringement. However the degree of similarity and the various aspects incorporating the same are normally subject to scrutiny. On the same note, while the general publics view on the similarity is of concern to both Cornell and JC Penny, that would not necessarily be the case since the service/products offered by the two show a stark contrast.
