David J. Skorton Next Cornell President

Posted in Life at Cornell, News by Cornell's Most Infamous on January 21st, 2006.

David Skorton has been named the 12th president of Cornell University. Currently the president of the University of Iowa, Skorton is a 56 year old cardiologist and computer scientist. This would make him the second successive president of the University of Iowa, Hunter Rawlings III being the first, to lead Cornell.

His New Job:

The Cornell Chronicles quotes him about his new appointment:

I am honored and humbled to assume the presidency of this great institution, which truly is one of the best universities in the world. Cornell University is justly known for its excellence in research, scholarly and creative activity; for the breadth and depth of quality among its many disciplines; for its commitment to undergraduate education; and for its health care, which also ranks among the world’s best.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Skorton around Cornell, however. In 1992, Rawlings appointed him to the position of Vice President for Research. And on July 1st, we’ll see Skorton take office and a new golden age dawn for Cornell University.

The Skeletons:

Skorton has a long and distinguished resume featuring years of professional, academic, administrative, and industry experience. His career is virtually un-marred, but there are a few interesting public details about his life that might give you pause:

  • He has a son from a previous marriage 1
  • He agreed to leave the University of Iowa, a public university, after butting heads with the state over health care issues in Iowa and receiving a 3% raise, as opposed to all other public school presidents who received a 5% raise 2
  • His salary at Cornell ($675,000) is double what U. Iowa paid him ($294,700) 3
  • Don’t touch his car, or he’ll sue you 4
  • You can facebook David Skorton 5
