Alex Atkind Allegedly Tortures Dog
According to this story in the Ithaca Journal, Cornell student Alexander H. Atkind is going to be on trial for torturing a dog placed in his care. Allegedly, after the animal chewed on some speaker wire of his, he beat it severely and doused it in bleach:
The officer found the apartment and kennel area in disarray, with dog food, bleach and detergent spilled. The dog had a laceration 1 inch by 2 inches wide, and some of its skull was showing through, according to the officer’s report. It would likely have diminished eyesight the rest of its life, and it had blood in its stool, probably from ingesting some bleach by licking itself.
The crime, “overdriving, torturing and injuring animals” is a misdemeanor. The officer noted that Atkind acted:
“cocky and arrogant” and “made numerous comments that this incident meant nothing to him, that he would do it again, and that he knows how the criminal justice system works, and guaranteed me the prosecution of this case would result in an ACD in City Court.”
In trying to figure out what kind of guy would do this I pulled up his Facebook profile, which entirely boring:

This is his old profile pic. What on earth is it?

The directory entry for Atkind notes a variety of phone numbers:
NETID: aha23
EMAIL: aha23@cornell.edu
CAMPUS: (607)257-0729 and (617)538-1265
LOCAL: (607)257-0729
MOBILE: (617)538-1265
CAMPUS: 343B Mews Hall
LOCAL: 111 VALENTINE PL., ITHACA, NY, 14850
As an aside, it’s interesting that this Alex Atkind is supposed to be class of 2006, like me, but is apparently a year younger (1983 he was born) and still at Cornell another year later. I wonder what happened to “delay” his graduation. If anyone knows him, or can explain this brutal behavior leave a comment. I’m not impressed with this character.
Update:
Some interesting forum posts over at the Ithaca Journal and Star Gazette:
- As a former dorm-neighbor of Mr. Atkind, this isn’t surprising at all. His nature is completely frightening, and his past behavior mirrors his current situation. He’s never shown any remorse when damaging personal property of others or being downright cruel. Furthermore, he has a SERIOUS anger problem, which rears its head often. When I read that the officer noted him as arrogant, I knew exactly what was going on. Alex thinks himself to be above everyone else, and that he can manipulate the system and other people to achieve his means. I hope he gets the maximum possible punishment for this awful, awful crime.
- is that guy the son of Robert & Nancy Atkind 5 Dover lane Lexington Mass. 02421 with a phone number of 781-863-8008? gee i thought so. i bet he is no longer at 710 Stewart ave.
- Wonder if this is the same Atkind who is a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School and has a private practice in Addiction Medicine? Could this young welp be his son?
- I am sickened that an innocent, good-hearted animal was tortured by a human. I hope to God this horrible person gets jail time. Poor Princess. What a horrible thing to loose part of your sight and have such a trauma. We should all write Cornell’s President and call for the expulsion of this jerk.
Update #3:
It gets better. Our favorite alleged Cornell torturer has been arrested for possessing “magic mushrooms”. Not the Chronic, not E, not some fancy designer drug his Dr. parents could have written him, but shrooms. SHROOMS. I didn’t know people still took them; didn’t that die out in the 70s?
Update #4:
Thanks to our reader, here is his mugshot. No one looks pretty for a mugshot:

Update #5:
The President of the Cornell Alumni Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi writes in to let us know that Alex Atkind, although associated with the Fraternity, was never a brother. This is a distinction which seems a bit like splitting hairs. He writes:
You list the telephone numbers associated with Alex’s Cornell directory and state “one of those phone numbers is also the listed number for the Cornell Pi Kappa Phi Chapter.” You draw enormous and factually incorrect implications from that. Readers of your entry automatically assume that because he had the number listed, Alex has an active tie to Pi Kappa Phi and is associated with the fraternity. Neither could be more wrong. Phone numbers on the Cornell directory are not vetted for accuracy. Furthermore, entries are not updated continuously and therefore, information remains on the directory that is not necessarily accurate. While it is technically true that Alex did have that number listed, he has not had any formal association with Pi Kappa Phi since the Spring of 2004.
Maybe it wasn’t clear, but my intention was to indicate that Alex considered himself a member or associate of the Pi Kappa Phi. Obviously his home number is not the frat number since according to directory information he lives either in Mews or C-Town. Whether he actually is a member of any fraternity is immaterial, since he clearly wants to be part of what he considers Greek life. The President goes on to list a few facts:
1.) Alex did rush Pi Kappa Phi and received a bid in the Spring of 2003.
2.) While Alex lived in our residence as an associate member for one semester, he disassociated in Spring 2004 and all ties were severed but between him, the house, chapter, and national organization
3.) Alex was never initiated into the brotherhood, and was never a brother of Pi Kappa Phi.
4.) Pi Kappa Phi has not had any formal ties or communication with Alex since he deactivated in the Spring of 2004.
So, instead of “Atkind is associated with PKP” we are now informed that “Atkind was a member of PKP for the year 2003-2004 but left.” I’m not sure this offers significantly more clarity, but it’s nice to lay out facts rather than guesswork or inference. As “people have been calling the number that Alex had in the directory leaving harassing messages,” I strongly advise you, whomever you might be to discontinue. Harassing a fraternity, his teachers, classmates, friends, parents, relatives, lawyer, or employer is morally ambiguous and probably illegal. The lady Justice will decide what punishment awaits him.
Update #6:
Alex Atkind and I have agreed to strike an earlier speculative update from this record, in exchange for a legal cease-fire. This agrees with me, since the information could not be verified, and if it could would likely not provide interesting basis.
Update #7:
Interestingly, Alex has pled guilty to a class E felony charge, and will be spending additional time in Jail on top of the time he got for his hallucinogenic mushrooms. When he called me (see Update 6) and asked me to remove a section associating him with several sketchy website profiles, he assured me that the whole truth wasn’t out there. I was skeptical, and now it seems I was right.

Internet Brands Alex Atkind “Dog Torturer”…
Alexander H. Atkind. Alex Atkind. Alex H Atkind. Heck, even Alex Atkins works though it’s not his name. Do a Google search on any of these terms, and you’ll find little flattering about this Cornell University……
[...] Let’s, just for a moment here, think about what happens to a guy like this. The story about the abuse ran in the Ithaca Journal on March 16. Cornell alumna/blogger Elliot Back picks up on the story that night and pulls up his Facebook profile (birthday: August 31, 1983), his Cornell directory information (cell phone is a 617 number), and jabs at him for: [...]
[...] Elliot Back outed Alex Atkind (aka Alexander H. Atkind, the dog abuser from Cornell) with Facebook photos and college phone numbers. Back isn’t alone. Akind is receiving a google-bomb in a conscious and unconscious effort to smear Atkind’s reputation. [...]
[...] Perhaps the most information on Atkind comes from the Cornell Blog: An Unofficial Blog about Cornell University. Seems that Atkind has never been Mr. Popularity, based in large part on his inability to get along with others. [...]
As long as his picture and name get in front of as many compassionate people as possible I’ll be happy. Let him suffer years of infamy.
[...] You can find more information on Atkind at the Cornell Blog-An unofficial blog about Cornell University. Seems Atkind has never been what you might call a ‘model student’ of member of our society….. No Rating [...]
Just wondering if anyone knows any news on Atkinds trial.
Last thing I heard was he was charged with the drug posession and held on $25,000 bail. Nothing since. The Ithaca Journal has not done anything.
Can someone please enlighten me?
This guy needs an a_ _ beating from someone. From what I hear he is not to stable and to me that is a major problem for our social socitey. If he is given just a slap on the wrist then that is poor judgement by the prosecutor. If I were the dogs owner I would not even worry about the law. It would become my law and my day in court with him and that could get bad. Animals do not know better and that is why we call them animals. I guess he falls into the same criteria. I wish the dog had mauled his dumb a _ _.
Isn’t it considered a warning sign, for future sociopathic violence against people, when someone practices deliberate cruelty against animals (over & above negligence, say) and has that Ted Bundy-style arrogance (I’m so smart, the legal system can’t hurt me)?
Atkind is clearly a ticking time bomb; too bad he only received a misdemeanor citation for this sad animal cruelty incident. Atkind is free and Princess, the innocent dog, has to live the rest of her life without being able to see, among other dreadful things. Cruelty towards animals is one of the first steps that escalates into further abuse towards people.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

When this piece of garbage dies, I hope he is subjected to an afterlife filled with eternal torture and misery for what he perpetrated on this defenseless animal.
This guy is a piece of $hit. He was my housemate from in the fall of 2006. He answered an ad and filled a subletter spot. Alex was a shady individual the whole semester and always seemed to be on some sort of drug (probably meth) as he had little to no emotional or intellectual interaction and always was stealing food and other things. We found out and caught him on camera stealing some of our things and we ripped him to pieces so we kicked him out at the end of the semester. Funny thing that happened during this semester – our house got robbed….twice. The first time my gamecube and my playstation were taken as well as about $4000-$7000+ worth of electronical equipment and other items from my housemates. Now I’m not saying he did this, because I have no proof – but I’m also not saying he didn’t do this – unless today he is caught with these items. Although the first time the house was robbed, Alex’s stuff was taken as well – we thought it was just a scam of his – he said he found the guy and he went with his friend to this guys house and he said he beat the $hit out of him and ripped his house apart. Now this was a stupid idea, because if the guy who stole our stuff knew why he was there then he would come again – but Alex only returned with my gamecube and nothing of any of the other housemates stuff, which raises me to question whether he stole the stuff and felt like giving me it back, because he was secretly stealing other stuff from me the whole semester. However, the second time we we’re robbed was done in the same exact fashion and specific items were missing to which Alex had expressed an affinity to – my friend’s water pipe, his guitar, and other various items we’re left that any normal burglar would have taken. So thats about most of what I know about this sick kid and he already deserves every bad thing that comes to him in life and more.
lmao @ The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
America treats its animals decently, to a certain extent, despite the fact that most Americans are douchebags.
dog had a laceration 1 inch by 2 inches wide,
and some of its skull was showing through,
according to the officer’s report.
This kid lived in my house for Fall 2006. He answered a sublet of ours. He was completely removed from this world the entire semester. We caught him stealing weed from us. I don't smoke weed anymore, but at the time we caught him on motion camera stealing from us after we planted a rather elaborate but completely easy to detect scheme. He was always out in space all day long and never said much or did much that we knew about. We were robbed twice that semester and I bet you that it had to do something with Alex. I guarantee you if I searched through his possessions I would find over $4000 in stuff from the six roomates I had. We were robbed in the beginning of the semester and Alex “found” the guy who stole our stuff and sent him to the hospital and destroyed his house. He came back from the ordeal with only his stuff and my gamecube (presumably so he could play it). He showed me his shoes which he said were bloody – they looked like they were colored with red markers.
Stay away from this kid is all I have to say.
