Asher Roth: Asleep in the Bread Aisle
If you took an apathetic Eminem stoned out of his mind and forced him to make a rap album, you mind end up with something like Asher Roth’s Asleep in the Bread Aisle, which will be officially released on 4/20 for the low price of $7.99. Buying the album means you’ll get a chance to hear your Slope Day opener before he hits the stage.
This might not be a good thing–in every possible way, from lyrics, to delivery, to backing music, and beats, he’s just the latest breed of commercial rap-crap, lacking any musicality or passion. If a word had to describe him, it would be apathy. And, no relation to the underground hip-hop artist Apathy who delivers his own apocalyptic lines with a messianic fervor. Asher Roth’s apathy is the stuff of a loser who dropped out of college to smoke weed in his basement.
Decide for yourself, but here’s a small sample of his lyrics. They’re guaranteed to drop the functioning level of your brain down through the abstraction of sentience into free-associating drug-ridden male-fantasy:
- “chumps can’t fuck with the punk kids / Ash Roth be the king of the blumpkins”
- “But Em was in it way before I commited / And his lyrics were the shit, so I really gotta come with it / But each critic be picking apart my writing / if it isn’t up to par”
- “Yeah I’m fresh, super fresh / I would do me in a sec”
- “When it comes to condoms put two on (Trust me)”
